Watched a TV program last month by "The weapons hunter(?) looking for the best "sniper" rifle. They used the No4, the Springfield and several Russian and German rifles all of WW2 vintage. They were the high tech rifles of their day, I suppose.

A good sniper can make almost any rifle work beyond the average shooters ability. At least the ones that don't rely on technological upgrades!

I would think from that era the best sniper rifles might have come from say Switzerland since the culture of shooting and quality standards or maybe Sweden. You know countries not under pressure to just turn out as many rifles as they can because they are actively engaged in combat.

USSR just took the best grouping rifles and added an optic. They also tended to field a lot more snipers than any other country.

Plus, any country that encourages hunting will have snipers.
